NORTH
CAROLINA

  • As of 2020, NC received a “D” for the Political Participation Composite Index, a measure of women’s political status created by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research

  • Every vote counts—most recently, NC elected its governor and one senator by less than 5 percentage points

  • Voter suppression—the NC Supreme Court recently reversed several crucial voting rights decisions, enabling restrictive ID requirements for voting. These laws disproportionately impact people of color, who account for 37.4% of the state's population.
